VOLUNTEER CATEGORIES

Experiences with volunteers have shown us the need to create different types of volunteering. Three types of volunteering have been identified, which vary in the main activities but also have activities in common. Each type of volunteering is essential for the execution of the projects carried out in coordination with the Municipality of Puerto Lopez and Machalilla National Park.

1.- Volunteer Assistant of Investigations (VAI)

In this category the volunteer will spend most of their time assisting in the collection of biological data of great importance for the programs that are developed. The profile of the volunteers are from studies in marine biology or related sciences.

As VAI you will also be entrusted with the review of data collected in the field, the realization of elementary statistical analysis (example: create tables, bar graphs, histograms, etc.) and the entry of data in the database of institutions with whom we work with.

In addition, you will participate to a lesser degree (40% of your time) in all environmental education activities carried out by our organization. In the case of volunteers who wish to practice in a health center, they must be students of medicines or dentistry. For those who wish to perform another type of work in the health center it is not required to be students of the related specialty if they do not have the will and desire to collaborate.

2.- Volunteer of Environmental Education (VEA)

As an Environmental Education Volunteer (VEA) you will take part in all the activities carried out by our organization. The volunteer will dedicate part of their time to working with children from the primary schools of Puerto López and nearby towns, teaching them about the importance of conserving the marine ecosystem (May to October). The Environmental Education Volunteer will help with the design and construction of murals and planters for schools, garbage cleaning activities on the beaches and seabed of Puerto Lopez and surrounding areas. Educational programs on the problems that garbage generates in marine life.

3.- General Volunteer (VG)

This type of volunteer spends half of their time helping with research activities and the other half helping with environmental education activities. It is not expected that this volunteer take initiative regarding the activities of each project but all the activities that will be carried out will be based on a schedule that the organization will elaborate according to the season that the volunteers are present for. It is not required that the volunteer have a specialization as the task vary greatly.
